Horse Theme Sisterhood On the Ranch Session

The Vision: Bohemian, lace, pampas grass, eucalyptus, & Galloping Wild Horse Souls
I’ve always been obsessed with the duality of wildness and softness — the idea that we can be powerful and raw, but still delicate and intentional. Horses, to me, are the perfect symbol of this energy. Their bodies are built for power and their spirits for freedom, yet they lean into love when it's earned. Riding horses for work on ranches penning cattle was something out of this little girls dreams. I loved riding the horses and feeling the response of a well trained horse, when they know what you want, and know how to get the job done was something incredible... To say that we had the same experience on this day, was a little more complicated then we realized. Horses got a mind of their own in the fields, and fruit roll ups, and oats were our way to get their attention.
When the idea came to me to host a styled shoot built around wild horse energy after the farm job, I knew I needed more than just aesthetics. I needed the right horses, the right people, and a location that felt like it could hold the full spectrum of feminine energy — from soft sisterhood to fierce sensuality. Cue: Courtney Heins, and her Partner Cory Heins with Rock Bottom Ranch all their beloved herd of gorgeous horses. They spent the whole day with us guiding the horses around for pose ideas I had in mind, using oats as motivation, and the reigns and flowers to lead and guide them. We tried a few different methods, but along the way she kept us all safe with the horses, and got us to sign liability waivers as well! I really loved being able to have freedom to play with all the horses in the herd and get photos with each one of them! by the end of the session, we had a couple in the back field that just couldn't wait to have photos with us as they had seen all the oats and commotion for everyone else, so of course we stopped in with them with Corinne at the end!
Bella Bc Started off with the wild horses, I call them wild, but they are far from, they are the lot of race horses!! Love these babies, but they were a difficult bunch to manage, and they loved to wander off a lot. the smaller pen made it a lot easier to keep them more together, and we had Courtney and her Partner Cory work on the horses, shuffling them around the pen to keep them in front of me, and not over at their owners waiting for the next batch of oats.

The Horses: Our Living Muses
Every horse brought into this shoot had a story — and if you know me, you know I don’t do surface-level. I wanted horses with depth. With scars and stories. With pasts and presence.
We featured:
- Three ex-racehorses, symbols of speed, spirit, and rebirth.
- Rammy, the orange horse, warm and alert like firelight.
- Handy, the brown ombre to grey with the white bum, an absolute showstopper with quiet strength.
- Rosy the Donkey, perhaps the real MVP of charm and chill vibes.
- A few rescues, whose resilience added soul to every frame.
Each of these animals carried their own energy into the lens — calm, fierce, gentle, proud — and our models intuitively matched their vibe. There were no forced poses, just interactions, connection, and co-creation.

The Florals: Wild Beauty Meets Western Soul
Florals can make or break a styled shoot. For this one, I knew I needed something earthy, romantic, and bold — something that felt like it had bloomed in a dusty canyon or grown along the trails of a desert bride.
Enter Jenni Sustrate-Mills from Country Love Blooms, who created pure magic with:
- Soft white roses for feminine contrast
- Wisps of eucalyptus for grounding energy
- Dreamy, airy pampas grass for texture and movement
She designed three key elements:
- A grounded arch piece that felt like a portal into the wild feminine
- An anchor floral installation — bold, unruly, glorious
- A bridal-inspired bouquet that balanced softness and sass
Every bloom felt intentional, every sprig added poetry. Jenni’s florals didn’t just decorate the shoot — they elevated the story.
Funny note, I actually met Jenni for the first time at an event called 100 Women Who Care Tri Municipal Region prior to this horse event, but after we had already discussed planning things!! I am so glad I got to meet our florist before our collaboration, it made this connection that much more special!! And since then, I have also worked with AJ Boudoir Photography who also knew her, the day after using her florals for a second time doing another beautiful fantasy inspired photoshoot using a canoe around the corner from my house in a pond Ive been eyeing up for years waiting for the magic to align. Thanks to Jenni BOTH of these incredibly beautiful bohemian dream sessions come true! If you wanna see the session I did the day after check this out: CANOE POND BLOG POST

The Models and Second Shooter: Wild Women in Their Element
Our models didn’t just show up — they showed DOWN. Each of these women brought their own style, sass, and sisterhood to the shoot.
Bella B.C.
In a short white dress, cowgirl boots, and the cutest white hat — Bella was our fresh-faced free spirit. Her energy was bubbly and soft, like champagne on a sunny day. She brought that classic western bride-meets-badass vibe. She also got a cute little black dress to go with the black three wild race horses. They even got all fired up for her for a couple shots!
Yailen Ortiz, Anna Bastien & Shanel Hernandez
These three? The ultimate girl gang. These women showed up not only to model but to connect. You could tell they were real friends — the kind that belly laugh, adjust each other’s hats, and shout compliments from across the pasture.
- They wore a boho dress, cowgirl boots, and denim shorts with bold hats and big energy.
- Their trio photos felt like sisterhood on film — real, unfiltered, and radiant.
- They spoke Spanish to each other throughout the shoot, and honestly, hearing that made my heart light up. I’ve spoken Spanish since I was a child, and it felt like home, like magic, like music behind the moments.
Karissa Danscuk
Karissa brought the heat. In a sheer lingerie-inspired dress, leather boots, and with a rope and whip in hand, she stepped into the role of Wild Horse Tamer — part dominatrix, part desert queen. She posed boldly in front of the horses, commanding presence and holding space for her raw, unfiltered energy. Her boho dress added softness, but that rope? 🔥
Corinne Rainville
Corinne brought a grounded, soulful energy that felt like she belonged with the horses. With her rich brown hair, a boho tan-toned crop top, and high-waisted 70s flare pants bleached with daisies — she looked like a time traveler from a desert dream. Her embroidered cowboy boots and beaded accents in her hair added even more personality to her vibe. But what stood out most?
The horses loved her.
Corinne had that quiet strength, the kind that animals recognize. Whether it was Handy nudging her shoulder or Rammy gently bowing his head beside her, she was in sync with every horse she touched. She earned what we lovingly called the “Horse Whisperer” award of the day. So many of her shots are glowing close-ups — just her, the horse, and a little bit of wild telepathy.
Ivy Jane Photography
Ivy had 2 other shoots booked that day, and she took a trip overseas during the planning of our shoot, (jealous!! you go girl!) she still was able to make it down and dedicated her time to get some shots of these girls!!! She couldnt stay for long, but I am still glad to meet another beautiful photographer in the community to work with on a creative vision of mine! Thanks for coming out Ivy, I cant wait to see your photos!! So nice to meet you and get creative together, I loved seeing you take the lead and direct the girls into some fun poses with symmetry and bad ass sisterhood cowgirl vibes! Give her a follow to check out her photos from the shoot- or Click this LINK.

The Location: Rock Bottom Ranch
Tucked away and full of rustic charm, Rock Bottom Ranch was the perfect home for this shoot. Hosted by the ever-gracious Courtney Heinz, the space gave us:
- Room to run, roam, and ride
- Soft golden light at every hour
- Natural textures: wood, dirt, grass, and dust
- A connection to the land that grounded the shoot in realness
Courtney not only opened her ranch to us — she welcomed the vision. That kind of support behind the scenes makes all the difference when you're wrangling horses, florals, props, and models.

Behind the Scenes: The Chaos & the Magic
Not every moment went according to plan — and that’s what made it perfect. Horses tried to steal bouquets. Hats flew off in the wind. Models laughed mid-pose. Florals wilted in the sun. And every single moment felt alive.
This wasn’t about perfection. It was about presence.
We danced between wild and soft. Between dust and glam. Between the old stories these horses carried and the new stories we were writing with our cameras.
We didn’t try to tame the wild. We partnered with it.
